The conflict in Ethiopia

A power struggle between the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Tigray Interim Administration, appointed by the Ethiopian federal government, led to renewed conflict in the north, with the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) taking control of key areas and migrating thousands. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who is seeking to consolidate power after the June 2026 election, faces simultaneous insurgencies in Amhara and Oromia. Eritrea’s support for the dissident factions and their military build-up along the common border increase the likelihood of inter-State war, which could have repercussions for the entire Horn of Africa region.
